So, we’ve just landed on Salt Spring Island, and naturally, our first official outing as newcomers was to Ruckle Provincial Park, the local crown jewel of rugged coastline and sheep-studded fields. As you’d expect, the park offers some serious “nature immersion” opportunities—think trails winding along jagged cliffs, fields filled with grazing livestock, and a surprising number of raccoons who appear to have no personal boundaries.
Ruckle Park’s been here long before us, with its origins as a family homestead dating back to the 1870s when the Ruckle family settled here, dreaming of the simpler life. Apparently, they held onto that dream for a few generations and gifted the park to BC, complete with a handful of historic buildings, so city-slickers like us could wander around pretending we’re rustic island folk.
